History of the school

Our school was established by the Ministry of Mining in 1950 as a Secondary Technical School of Mining. It was to prepare educated and skilled staff for developing mining industry after the Second World War. The youth, both boys and girls, from various parts of Poland were recruited and stayed in the boarding school. The education course lasted four years and from 1958 it was prolonged to five years. The graduates as qualified technicians were employed in coal mines in the region and received well-paid jobs and other benefits. But then the mines were short of well skilled miners so our school opened Basic Vocational School of Mining. The school had already its own library and “ Technik” sports club where the youth were successful in handball, basket ball and football, the most popular sport in Silesia. Antoni Piechniczek who was a student in our school became a famous football player and internationally recognized national football coach. The school played very important role in cultural life in the region. The Song and Dance Ensemble which was founded in 1954 gathered gifted students from others schools as well. The team of 200 were often compared to Ślask or Mazowsze Ensemble and they added splendour to local and nation cultural events. In 1959 the scouting troop started acting in our school. The boarding school for 300 students offered a chance to young people from other poorer regions of Poland to get education and improve their living conditions. In school workshops the future miners had trainings gaining experience and skills with coal mines cooperation. Because coal mines still needed more economists Secondary School of Economics was established in 1970s. The classes with specializing at economics and organization became specially popular among girls. The next years (after 1989 ) brought changes in our economy and the authorities of our school decided to launch some new specializations. Andrzej Kowalski the present head of the school initiated a developing schedule for the school. At that time many coal mines decreased their production and some of them were closed, mining specializations were not needed any more and in 1993 the first typical mining classes were mostly reduced. Instead of them new types of technical schools were introduced : Technical School of Electronics, Technical School of Environmental Protection, Technical School of Car Repair and Basic Vocational School with electrical, electronical and mechanical specialization. In 1993 the school changed its patron and from then it was called the Wojciech Korfanty Complex of Technical Schools .On the first of January 1996 our school was taken over by the town authorities and further transformation followed in quick succession. The Song and Dance Ensemble ceased to exist. School of Economics, School of Car Repair and School of Environmental Protection were closed. A new school called Post Secondary Vocational College was opened. In1998 the boarding school was definitely closed. In 2000 our school celebrated its fifties anniversary. During its existence the number of school graduates was about 20 thousand and many of them achieved high professional position in their career. The contemporary students can also find this school very interesting in which they can get good and practical education. This school’s most important goal is to prepare its students to continue their education on the higher level of studying and to lead independent life in their family and the society.
